MILWAUKEE (Dec. 10, 2018) - The Milwaukee Center for Independence’s medical day care program earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal of Approval® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care.

MCFI underwent a rigorous on-site survey on Dec. 6 and 7. During the review, a Joint Commission surveyor evaluated compliance with nursing care standards related to several areas, including coordination and environment of care, staff education, human resources, emergency management and infection prevention and control. Surveyors also conducted on-site observations and interviews with leaders and staff of the program.

"MCFI is pleased to receive accreditation from the Joint Commission, the premier health-care quality improvement and accrediting body in the nation,” said Teri Zywicki, MCFI CEO and President. The surveyor, Dr. Alan Pawlow expressed that his experience “was moving and heartwarming. “It’s very clear that the staff is highly motivated, engaged and caring. I could see that the staff loves the children as if they were their own. The staff is clearly dedicated and take pride in its work.”

“Joint Commission accreditation provides agencies with a framework for the processes needed to improve the care patients and residents receive,” said Gina Zimmermann, a senior executive director at the Joint Commission. “We commend MCFI for its efforts to become a quality improvement organization.”

MCFI offers the only community based skilled day nursing service in Milwaukee for children ages birth to 21 with complex health care needs that is certified by Medicaid. Without the vital services the program provides, our children, many who are ventilator- or tracheostomy-dependent, may otherwise have to spend their days at home with an in-home nurse and not have the opportunity to play, learn and enjoy the company of other kids.

The accreditation and certification programs are awarded for a three-year period. It is the fifth time in a row that the medical day care program earned the accreditation.
