Success Story: Lukas graduates to greater independence

When Lukas Klinge was born, he weighed less than 2 pounds. It was the start of a long road for him and his mom, Julia.

Among his many challenges in his early life, Lukas would need the assistance of a trach in order to receive the full complement of oxygen he needed. For four-plus years, Lukas was a participant in MCFI Children's Services and Pediatric Skilled Nursing Program. Through those years, Lukas received the necessary care and therapy to help his development.

In October 2022, at nearly 5 years old, Lukas walked out of CFI without a trach.

Lukas has graduated and is onto the next step of living a more independent life.

Check out his amazing story and a message of gratitude from his mom.

Technology advancements helping CFI’s children

At the Centers for Independence, we serve children who face different challenges, such as developmental delays. Other challenges include vision impairments and that’s where CFI’s newest tool comes into play.

Recently, MCFI Children’s Services and Schools began use of a 3-D printer aimed to help our students with vision challenges at our school, Wells Street Academy.

“Few technologies are as gratifying as a 3-D printer,” said Kathleen Urban, education/lead teacher at Wells Street Academy. “It allows our students to explore their world in new ways. Many of the students attending WSA have vision impairments or CVI (cerebral visual impairment) that make it hard for them to process 2-D images.”

The 3-D printer can print simple objects such as a square, a circle, a triangle or even a lion.

It was a purchase made with grant money from the Francie Luke Silverman Foundation, which has also awarded money for the children’s program to purchase iPads.

“A 3-D printer can enable real world implementation of a student’s knowledge of vocabulary words by being able to touch and manipulate objects while learning about their meaning and use in the world,” Urban said.

Medical Day Care

Established in 2006, our medical day care serves children and toddlers with complex medical conditions. The program goal is to improve the health of each child — many who are tracheotomy- and/or ventilator-dependent — while providing a caring and enriching learning environment and support for the family. It is the only community-based skilled nursing service for children in Milwaukee certified by Medicaid. It is also the only program that has earned the Joint Commission gold-seal accreditation, an internationally recognized quality certification for health-care organizations.
